Hoover's First Students

The first day of school for the Fall Semester and the First Opening day of Herbert Hoover High School was the day after Labor Day, September 2, 1930.

The students who were enrolled consisted of the following:

  • Students starting their second semester of the 9th grade (High Night Grade). These students had to leave Woodrow Wilson Jr High School a semester early (without having a ninth grade graduation ceremony or having the privilege of purchasing a Woodrow Wilson ring or pin) in order to meet the requirement of sufficient students to open the school.
  • Students who had just graduated from junior high school, started Low Tenth grade.
  • Students who completed the first semester of the 11th grade. These students were mostly from San Diego High School. They were not forced to attend Hoover, but were given the choice of continuing at San Diego High School through graduation or continuing at Hoover through the balance of their high school studies.

The first graduation ceremony held at Hoover was one and one-half years later in June of 1932.

The graduation ceremony of students who went all the way through Hoover (from high ninth grade through their senior year) was in February 1934.
